The second one avoids the trap of serving as little more than a seguay from the first to the third novel, and is a capable story itself, one which leaves readers hungry for more. The writing is somewhat effusive, but highly descriptive, if a bit artificial at times. This book has him traveling to find his mate, but when tragedy strikes, he finds himself in the world of the two-leggeds, which we didn't even have an inkling of in the first book. It continues to tell the story of Jan, the Firebringer, and his adventures with his band. This is the second book of the trilogy, which wasn't really intended to be so when the first book was published, but since the initial one left many questions unanswered this one works fairly well.
